Heat Pump Installation Cost in 2026

A ducted heat pump costs $6,000 to $16,000 installed in 2026, and most quotes land between $9,000 and $12,000. A standard 3 ton replacement in a house with sound ductwork runs $5,500 to $11,000. Ductless systems start near $2,000 for a single zone. Everything below explains what moves your number inside that range.

What these figures cover

Installed price: equipment, labor, permits, refrigerant and removal of the old system. Existing ductwork assumed sound. Before any state or utility rebate.

That definition matters more than the number itself. Most published heat pump prices do not say whether they include labor, permits or removal of the old system, which is the main reason the internet cannot agree on what this job costs. Our method page documents every source and every limitation.

Ranges are installed prices before any state or utility rebate. Ductless figures follow zone count rather than tonnage because that is how ductless work is quoted.

Where the money actually goes

On a typical ducted replacement, equipment is roughly half the bill and labor is most of the rest. Licensed technicians charge between $75 and $200 per hour depending on the market, and a straightforward changeout takes three to eight hours. A complex install, a difficult attic or an electrical upgrade can stretch it past two days, which is where five figure quotes come from.

  • Outdoor unit and indoor air handler or coil. The single largest line.
  • Labor. Removal, set, braze, evacuate, charge, commission.
  • Refrigerant and line set. Reusing an old line set is sometimes acceptable and sometimes not. Ask why.
  • Electrical at the equipment. Disconnect, breaker, whip. A panel upgrade is separate and is not in our ranges.
  • Permit and inspection. Varies by municipality, often $100 to $500.
  • Removal and disposal of the old system, including refrigerant recovery.

Line items that are commonly quoted separately and are not in the ranges above: new or replacement ductwork, electrical panel upgrades, asbestos abatement, and after hours emergency premiums.

Sizing, and why we do not price by square footage

Capacity is measured in tons. One ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour. The rule of thumb you will see everywhere is one ton per 500 to 600 square feet, and it is a starting point, not an answer.

Ceiling height, window area and orientation, insulation and local climate all move the required capacity, sometimes by a full ton. That is why a proper quote follows a Manual J load calculation. If nobody measured your house and someone still named a tonnage, that is a bigger problem than the price.

Oversizing is not a safe error. An oversized system short cycles, cools before it has dehumidified, and leaves you with clammy air and more compressor wear. Bigger is not insurance.

We do not yet publish an installed price for every tonnage. The per tonnage figures circulating online come overwhelmingly from a single family of pages with a lead capture phone number, and we are not prepared to restate them as fact. Capacity level pricing will be published when our own quote sample supports it.

Efficiency: what the ratings cost you

Cooling efficiency is SEER2, heating efficiency is HSPF2. Current federal minimums for most heat pumps are 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, so anything sold new clears that bar. Above the minimum, higher ratings mean variable speed compressors and better controls, which raise the purchase price and lower the running cost.

The honest position: a high efficiency system at the top of the range can be correctly priced, and a base model at the same price is not. Efficiency is a reason a quote is high. It is not an excuse for one.

Cold climates

Standard heat pumps perform well above roughly 25°F. Cold climate models are engineered to keep useful output far lower, down to around -13°F on current equipment, and they cost more for the same capacity. In a northern state the relevant comparison is not heat pump against furnace on sticker price, it is the cold climate model plus backup strategy against the furnace over ten years. Federal and state incentives in 2026

This changed and a lot of published pricing has not caught up. The Section 25C credit that covered up to $2,000 on a qualifying heat pump, and the Section 25D credit for geothermal, both expired for property placed in service after 31 December 2025. For work done in 2026, the live pathways are state programs, utility rebates and the IRA HEAR and HOMES programs, and those vary enormously by address.

Two practical consequences. First, treat any price presented as post incentive with suspicion unless the source says which incentive and which year. Second, check your own utility before you sign, because a rebate you did not know about is worth more than the discount you can negotiate.

Why quotes for the same job differ so much

Published averages for this job disagree by more than a factor of two. Angi reports a customer reported average near $6,100. HomeGuide puts a typical air source installation between $10,000 and $25,000. EnergySage, working from real quotes through its own marketplace, reports a national average around $15,400 before incentives, and a spread from roughly $8,000 in New Mexico to $33,000 in New York.

Those are not mostly errors. They are different scopes, different samples, and different treatment of incentives, all presented as one number. Geography alone moves this job by 20 to 30 percent either side of the national figure, which is why we are building state level ranges rather than adjusting a national average with a multiplier.

How to check the quote in front of you

  1. Confirm the scope in writing. Permits, refrigerant, removal and disposal either are included or they are not. A quote missing them is not cheaper, it is incomplete.
  2. Find the capacity and the model number. Compare against the range for that capacity, not for your floor area.
  3. Ask for the load calculation. If there is not one, ask how the tonnage was chosen.
  4. Separate the equipment tier from the labor. Two quotes at the same price can be very different jobs.
  5. Get three quotes. Our range tells you whether to be surprised. Three quotes tell you what your house costs.

When a heat pump is the wrong answer

If your existing furnace is young and your ductwork is sound, replacing only the air conditioner is often the cheaper correct decision. If your electrical panel cannot carry the load, the panel upgrade can swallow the efficiency saving for years. And if you are moving within three years, the payback will not reach you. A contractor who never mentions any of this is selling, not advising.

Common questions

How long does a heat pump last?

Twelve to fifteen years is typical, and up to twenty with consistent maintenance. Lifespan is shorter in coastal salt air and in systems that were oversized from the start.

Is a heat pump cheaper than a furnace and air conditioner?

Usually cheaper to install than a furnace plus separate air conditioner, because it is one system doing both jobs. Whether it is cheaper to run depends on your electricity and gas prices, which is a state by state question rather than a national one.

Can I reuse my existing ductwork?

Often yes, and that assumption is built into every range on this page. Leaky or undersized ducts change both the price and the result, and duct replacement is quoted separately.

Why is my quote above the range?

The most common legitimate reasons are premium or cold climate equipment, difficult access, electrical work, and emergency scheduling. Ask which of those applies. If the answer is none of them, get another quote.

Is a suspiciously low quote good news?

Rarely. A price under the market floor usually means something is excluded: permits, the indoor coil, refrigerant, or disposal. Ask what is not in it before you celebrate.

Should I wait for prices to fall?

There is no sign of that. Refrigerant standards and efficiency minimums have pushed equipment costs up, not down, and the federal credits that softened the blow have expired. Off season scheduling in spring or early autumn is the discount that actually exists.
