How to read the result
The bar shows the full range we observe for that system. The solid cobalt section is where most quotes land. The vertical mark is your number.
- Below the range. Usually a sign that something is excluded rather than a bargain. Ask whether permits, refrigerant, the indoor coil and disposal are in the price.
- Low end. Inside the range but under the middle of the market. Worth confirming the equipment tier and the labor warranty.
- Where most quotes land. Normal for this scope of work.
- High end. Still within range. Premium or cold climate equipment, difficult access, electrical work or an emergency call all explain it legitimately.
- Above the range. Above every published range for this scope. Ask for an itemised breakdown and get a second quote.
What this tool does not do
It compares a number against a national range. It does not know your house, your climate zone, your local labor rates or what is on your estimate. A quote at the top of the range can be completely correct for a difficult job, and a quote in the middle can be wrong if the system is the wrong size.
Two things it cannot substitute for: a Manual J load calculation, and three quotes. Use this to know whether to be surprised, then use those to decide.
Before you compare
Check that your quote and our range describe the same work. Ours cover equipment, labor, permits, refrigerant and removal of the old system, with existing ductwork assumed sound, before any rebate. If your estimate includes new ductwork or a panel upgrade, subtract those lines before comparing. The full definition is on the method page.
Help us improve the ranges
If your quote fell outside the range, that is useful data. Send the state, the capacity and what the price covered through the contact page. Reports are used in aggregate and no details are passed to contractors.
