Central Air Conditioner Replacement Cost in 2026
Replacing a central air conditioner costs $4,000 to $12,000 installed in 2026, and most quotes land between $6,000 and $9,500. Replacing the air conditioner and furnace together runs $8,000 to $20,000. Ductwork is not included in either figure.
What these figures cover
Installed price: equipment, labor, permits, refrigerant and removal of the old system. Existing ductwork assumed sound. Before any state or utility rebate.
Almost every disagreement between published air conditioning prices comes down to this definition. A figure covering the condenser alone and a figure covering a finished, permitted, commissioned job are not the same number, and most sources do not say which they are quoting. Ours is documented on the method page.
Cost by scope of work
| Job | What gets replaced | Installed range |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser only | Outdoor unit, existing coil retained | $3,000–7,000 |
| Full AC replacement, 3 ton | Condenser and matched indoor coil | $4,000–12,000 |
| AC and furnace together | Complete system, both machines | $8,000–20,000 |
| Ductwork replacement | Quoted separately, adds roughly | $3,000+ |

The mismatched coil problem
The cheapest quote on your table is often condenser only. It is a legitimate job in some circumstances and a bad idea in most. A new outdoor unit paired with an old indoor coil can lose efficiency, void the manufacturer warranty, and fail early because the two were never designed to work together. Modern refrigerant changes make the mismatch worse.
If one quote is dramatically below the others, this is the first thing to check. Ask directly: is the indoor coil being replaced, and is the system a matched AHRI listed pair?
Efficiency and refrigerant in 2026
Cooling efficiency is measured in SEER2, and federal minimums differ by region, roughly 13.4 to 14.3 SEER2 for split systems depending on where you live. Anything sold new clears the bar for your region. Above it you are buying variable speed operation and better humidity control, which raises the purchase price and lowers the running cost.
The bigger 2026 story is refrigerant. The industry transition away from R-410A to lower global warming potential refrigerants has raised equipment costs and made servicing older systems more expensive over time. That is a genuine reason quotes are higher than the figures you may remember from a few years ago, and it is one of the few price increases that is not going to reverse.
Repair or replace
The rule of thumb you will see quoted everywhere is to multiply the repair cost by the age of the unit, and replace if the result exceeds five thousand. It is a starting point that ignores several things that matter more.
- Is the compressor the failure? A failed compressor on a system past ten years usually means replacement, because the labor to change it is most of the way to a new unit.
- What refrigerant does it use? Older refrigerant is increasingly expensive to source, which quietly changes the arithmetic on any repair involving a recharge.
- How is the rest of the system? A new condenser attached to a tired coil and leaking ducts buys you less than the invoice suggests.
- How long are you staying? A repair that gets you three more years may be the correct financial answer even when replacement is the better system.
Checking your quote
- Confirm the capacity in tons and whether a load calculation was done.
- Confirm the indoor coil is included and the pair is matched.
- Confirm permits, refrigerant, and removal of the old system are in the price.
- Ask what refrigerant the new system uses.
- Ask whether the existing line set is being reused, and why.

Common questions
Is it cheaper to replace the AC and furnace at the same time?
Per machine, yes, because one visit covers shared labor. In total it is a larger cheque. It makes sense when both are near end of life or when a matched system is needed for warranty reasons.
Should I consider a heat pump instead?
If you are replacing cooling anyway, it is worth a quote. A heat pump is the same machine with the ability to run in reverse. See our heat pump cost guide and the comparison against a furnace.
When is the cheapest time to replace?
Spring and early autumn. In a July heat wave you are paying peak demand pricing and you have no time to compare quotes, which is the worst possible negotiating position.
