Heat Pump Installation Cost in Washington State (2026)
A ducted heat pump installation in Washington runs $6,500 to $20,000, with most Seattle-area quotes between $9,000 and $15,000. Seattle sits roughly 15 to 25 percent above the national average because of labor rates. Complex retrofits with electrical upgrades can pass $20,000.

Heat pumps are the default here
Western Washington’s mild, damp climate suits air source heat pumps almost perfectly, and the market has moved accordingly. City of Seattle permit data shows heat pump installations overtaking furnaces in single-family homes in 2014 and running at about four times the rate of furnace installations by 2024. Contractor experience is deep, which helps quality, but demand is strong enough that prices have not fallen.
The electrical panel question
The single biggest swing in a Washington quote is often electrical rather than mechanical. Many older homes have 100 or 150 amp panels that cannot support a heat pump alongside other modern loads such as an EV charger, induction range or electric dryer. A panel upgrade is a separate job, frequently several thousand dollars, and it is not included in our ranges. Ask early whether your panel is adequate, so it does not appear as a surprise line on the final quote.
Permits
In Washington, electrical permits are issued by the state Department of Labor and Industries even inside Seattle city limits, and a heat pump installation that needs new wiring or a dedicated circuit will need one. Mechanical permits come from the city or county. Ask which permits are included.
Rebates
Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy have both offered rebates on qualifying heat pumps, and the City of Seattle has run programs for households converting off oil heat, with larger support for income-qualified homes. Terms and contractor requirements change; Puget Sound Energy, for example, has required installation by a participating contractor to qualify. Confirm current terms directly with your utility before you sign. Federal residential credits ended for equipment installed after 2025.
Check a quote
Before you accept the quote
Ask for the heat pump model, capacity, SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings in writing, whether it is rated for cold climate performance, and whether the quote includes any electrical work. Our heat pump cost guide covers sizing and efficiency in more depth.
