Heat pump country

North Carolina is one of the clearest heat pump markets in the country. The Piedmont, where Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Greensboro sit, has hot humid summers and winters that rarely get cold enough to challenge a modern air source heat pump. Published 2026 data puts a Charlotte heat pump installation at an average of about $5,500, with most projects between roughly $3,900 and $7,500, and a central ducted heat pump replacement statewide at around $5,000 to $7,500.

Three climates in one state

  • Coast. Wilmington and the Outer Banks deal with salt air, which shortens the life of outdoor coils. Coastal-rated or coated equipment costs more and is worth asking about.
  • Piedmont. The bulk of the market and the bulk of the published data. Competitive contractor density keeps pricing near the middle of the range.
  • Mountains. Asheville and the high country see real winters. Cold climate heat pumps or a dual fuel setup with gas backup are common and cost more.

Efficiency, licensing and permits

North Carolina is in the Department of Energy’s Southeast region, where split air conditioners must meet 14.3 SEER2 (13.8 at 45,000 Btu per hour and above) based on installation date. Heat pumps follow the national 14.3 SEER2 minimum. Contractors need a state heating license (H1, H2 or H3 depending on the work), and the City of Charlotte, like most jurisdictions, requires a permit for major HVAC work. Published figures put a typical Charlotte heat pump permit at under $100, which makes a contractor who wants to skip it hard to justify.

Incentives in 2026

North Carolina does not run a large statewide heat pump rebate of the kind Massachusetts or New York offer. Utility programs exist and change; check your electric provider’s current residential offers directly. Federal residential credits for heat pumps ended for equipment installed after 2025.
