Why Minnesota runs above the national average
- Design temperatures to -20 degrees and below. Homes need more BTUs per square foot than southern states: a 2,000 square foot Minnesota house needs roughly 120,000 BTU, far above what the same house would need in a mild climate.
- A heating season from October to April. Seven months of operation makes the efficiency upgrade worth more here than almost anywhere.

The efficiency upgrade actually pays here
Moving from 80 percent to 95 percent or higher AFUE typically saves $300 to $600 a year on gas in a Minnesota winter, which pays back the difference in four to six years. In a mild climate the same upgrade rarely repays itself. This is one of the few states where the high efficiency tier is straightforwardly the right answer.

Xcel Energy and CenterPoint both run active rebate programmes, and they matter more now that the federal Section 25C credit has expired for equipment placed in service after 31 December 2025. Minnesota requires a mechanical permit for furnace replacement, typically $75 to $150, and it protects you at resale.
