Furnace and Heat Pump Replacement Cost in Colorado (2026)

A gas furnace replacement in Colorado runs $4,500 to $10,500 installed, with most Front Range quotes between $5,900 and $8,500. Denver metro pricing runs several percent above the state average. Cold climate heat pumps cost more up front but carry one of the largest utility rebates in the country.

Altitude changes the sizing

Gas furnaces lose capacity as air gets thinner, and manufacturers require their equipment to be derated or configured for high altitude installations. Denver sits at about 5,280 feet and Colorado Springs at about 6,000. A furnace sized with sea level numbers can be undersized for a Colorado home, and one sized carelessly in the other direction will short cycle. Ask the contractor how altitude was accounted for and whether a high altitude kit or adjustment is in the quote.

New furnace rules from 2026

A Colorado appliance standards law brought lower emission requirements for newly installed gas furnaces and water heaters into effect at the start of 2026. Working furnaces are not affected, but the next replacement must meet the new standard, and contractors report the compliant equipment adds roughly $1,000 to $2,000 or more compared with a similar pre-2026 installation. If a quote looks unusually cheap, ask whether the furnace being installed meets the current Colorado requirement.

The heat pump alternative

Colorado is where the heat pump math changes most. Xcel Energy, the main utility on the Front Range, offers a rebate for qualifying cold climate heat pumps that published guides put at $2,250 per heating ton, around $6,750 for a 3 ton system, without an income requirement. Published Denver figures put heat pump installations around $14,000 to $16,000 before that rebate. After it, the net price can sit close to a high efficiency furnace plus a new air conditioner. Rebate terms change, so confirm the current figure with Xcel directly before you sign.

Mountain homes

The ranges here are for the Front Range. Mountain homes face harder winters, more difficult access and fewer contractors, and quotes there run higher. Propane-heated homes have a different set of options entirely.

Get the model number, BTU input and AFUE rating in writing, ask how altitude was handled, and ask for a heat pump quote alongside the furnace. Our comparison of a heat pump against a furnace shows how to run the numbers on your own bills.
